Memorial Day will soon be here and the city of Mandan is looking at changing how Mandan residents and their loved ones can be memorialized at the Mandan Union Cemetery.
NO commemorative items will be allowed such as statues, vigil lights, benches, bird houses, hanging plants, flagpoles or “large” animals.
Do you as a #Mandan resident like this idea? NO GRAVE Memorials Allowed? The #Mandan City Commission on Tuesday May 19, 2015 will decide to change what has been allowed in the past: placing things in memorial on the graves of your loved ones. Currently you will look out on our cemetery at night and see the glow of little solar lights or maybe someone who has lost a child will have objects like teddy bears or other things or maybe a bench is placed so a family member can sit by a gravesite. These things will be removed by city workers if not removed by the proposed deadline. This proposal does not appear to have sought input from those living effected by the new rules. Bismarck has cemeteries that do not even allow a stone memorial. I loved the uniqueness of our Mandan Union Cemetery; I do not like this new policy. I understand it from a worker's perspective; it is easier to mow over a grave if nothing stands in your way. I would rather see the policy allowing a cemetery worker not to mow or require the descendants to care for the grave if they place memorials on the site. Contact your city commissioners and let them know what your opinion is on these new proposed rules.
Focus once again are NOW on taxpayer issues. 2012
